WWE SummerSlam 2014: 8 Worst Booking Decisions in PPV’s History

Posted by Erik Beaston On July - 28 - 2014
WWE SummerSlam has been one of the staples of Vince McMahon's promotion's pay-per-view calendar for nearly three decades, and in that time, it has been home to some outstanding matches and moments. Who can ever forget the Mega Powers overcoming the Mega Bucks in 1988, Bret Hart beating Mr. Perfect in 1991 and then dropping the same title to British Bulldog a year later at Wembley Stadium, the culmination of the Highway to Hell in 1998 and the rise of Brock Lesnar in 2002? With many tremendous moments that have occurred at the annual spectacular, there have also been a number of ...
Next month's SummerSlam is definitely worth getting excited about—mainly because of all the great feuds and programs that will culminate at the event. Obviously, there's the main event. Triple H officially announced on this week's Raw that John Cena would defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Brock Lesnar at the show. It's an intriguing match for a few reasons. First of all, it marks the first time Lesnar and Cena have clashed since their classic bout at Extreme Rules in April 2012. Intense, brutally violent and filled with some truly awe-inspiring bumps, that bout remains one of the best and most memorable ...

Chris Jericho Should Turn Heel Soon to Get the Most out of His WWE Return

Posted by Sharon Glencross On July - 28 - 2014
If WWE wants to get the most out of Chris Jericho's recent return to television, it should seriously consider turning him heel soon. OK, so Jericho isn't a terrible babyface. And he's been on the roster for so long and garnered so much respect the fans find it very easy to cheer for him. But, really, over the past couple of weeks, it's hard to fight the feeling that he simply might be better off as a heel. For one thing, WWE already has more top babyfaces than it needs. You've got John Cena, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose in the mix. There's ...
The future of TNA's Impact Wrestling is suddenly very murky. According to TMZ, Spike TV will not be renewing the popular wrestling show's contract in October.  We are still just in the rumor stages of this development, but WrestleZone.com's Mike Killam also cited sources relaying the same information. Per Killam, Impact Wrestling will be canceled if it doesn't get picked up by a new network "in a very short amount of time." This is potentially devastating news for TNA president Dixie Carter.  TNA gets a lot of flak for being a level below WWE, its rival promotion, but this is a potential fate ...

Cesaro’s Window to Become a Top Star is Quickly Closing

Posted by Alfred Konuwa On July - 27 - 2014
Monday on Raw, Cesaro shared a segment with top heel Triple H and rising star Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, this was nowhere near as promising as it sounds. Despite unquestioned skills in the ring, Cesaro has been hamstrung by comparatively weak promos and lukewarm charisma. If characteristics of a top WWE superstar were to be translated to a word cloud, the words "charisma" and "promos" would be just as large, if not larger than, "wrestling." In an effort to mask his perceived deficiencies in star power, Cesaro has spent the majority of his WWE career bouncing from manager to manager. The King of Swing has ...

WWE’s History with Japanese Stars May Be Bad News for Kenta

Posted by The Doctor Chris Mueller On July - 26 - 2014
Rumors were swirling for months, but it finally happened: Kenta signed with WWE. Now, he just needs to make sure he doesn't fall victim to the same thing that has plagued every other Japanese star who's ever worked for Vince McMahon. Kenta Kobayashi is considered one of the most talented technical wrestlers in the world, even inspiring some of WWE's top talent to borrow some of his moves. CM Punk's GTS was taken from Kenta, as was Daniel Bryan's flying knee. His influence is felt all over the world of wrestling, and the guy is only 33 years old. Talk about carving out your ...
This year's SummerSlam main event has been set, and to no one's surprise, John Cena is comfortably pencilled in, as he has been for many years. WWE fans have grown to expect that, which contributes to the surging, pulsating bubble of resentment for the leader of the Cenation. On the other side of the ring, fresh from the upset of the decade, is Paul Heyman's client, who defeated The Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania 30. Prior to WrestleMania, Brock Lesnar had endured a tumultuous WWE stint in which he lost as many matches as he won and fought to balance his credibility with ...

Stardust Is to Cody Rhodes’ Career as Goldust Was to Dustin’s

Posted by Justin LaBar On July - 26 - 2014
Cody Rhodes creating Stardust is a similar career move to Dustin Rhodes creating Goldust in 1995. Dustin was pretty polished in the ring. Mechanics and experience weren't what held him back from being a big star. It was his name and look that hindered things. He had to fight this blend of being too generic and living in the shadow of his father. He was “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes. Generic trunks and boots. He had a face that resembled his father, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, one of the most charismatic performers ever. It was that charismatic bar Dustin had to live up to. ...

WWE Programming’s Best Match for Week of July 26

Posted by Brad Jones On July - 26 - 2014
WWE programming this week has been rather uneven, with its television offerings and the Battleground pay-per-view last weekend all suffering from some distinct highs and lows. However, those highs did produce quite a few excellent matches, certainly more than in your average week.   Honourable Mentions This week's NXT saw the first match for the new lucha tag team of Sin Cara and Kalisto, as they took on The Vaudevillians. Kalisto is perhaps one of the most exciting talents in NXT, and putting him in this team looks like it could be of great benefit to both men; their match this week was ...

The Good, the Great and the Awesome from SmackDown (July 25)

Posted by Erik Beaston On July - 26 - 2014
With the countdown to SummerSlam underway, SmackDown rolled into Orlando for this week's broadcast. Young stars took center stage Friday night as Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Paige, the Usos and Bray Wyatt all featured heavily on the show. Reigns overcame the challenge of Alberto Del Rio, who provided the powerhouse with a far tougher fight than anyone could have imagined. Ambrose knocked off Cesaro in a huge No Disqualification match and the Usos defeated RybAxel, ending their monumental week on a high note. Paige continued the evolution of her character, defeating Naomi and gleefully mocking Divas champion AJ Lee in the process. Bray ...
