Alberto Del Rio Quits, Triple H Is Back and Top WWE News for Week of September 3

Posted by The Doctor Chris Mueller On September - 3 - 2016
As always, it's been a busy week for the men and women of WWE. Let's take a look at some of the bigger stories from the last seven days.       Mr. Fuji Dies The wrestling world lost another legend this week when Mr. Fuji, real name Harry Fujiwara, died on August 28 at the age of 82, according to WWE.com. Fuji was an accomplished wrestler, but most WWE fans will remember him as the salt-throwing manager of WWE Superstars like Yokozuna. He also became known as one of WWE's funnier characters, thanks to several video segments filmed with Don Muraco. They don't make talents like Mr. ...

The New Day vs. The Club: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Current WWE Feud

Posted by Ryan Dilbert On September - 2 - 2016
The New Day's continued attempt to keep Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson from seizing the WWE Tag Team Championship should be a far better story than it is. WWE found the ideal rivals for the champs and a smart place to position The Club. But where this feud succeeds conceptually, it has limped along thanks to an off-the-mark dynamic. Gallows and Anderson are simply not the predators they were with New Japan Pro Wrestling. WWE has diluted their aura, steered them in the wrong direction and left The New Day without worthy foils as a result.  As these two squads charge toward another meeting at ...

Examining Braun Strowman’s Direction, Upside and Long-Term Potential

Posted by Ryan Dilbert On September - 2 - 2016
The WWE menagerie needs creatures like Braun Strowman. Giants who happily wreak havoc have long been a part of pro wrestling. Strowman's frame and ferocity put him in that group, but it will be his ability to sustain his character that determines whether he is a memorable monster or another oversize washout.  After months of being one of Bray Wyatt's imposing soldiers as part of The Wyatt Family, Strowman is now a solo act. The July WWE draft split up the faction. Wyatt and Erick Rowan went to SmackDown; Strowman found a home on Raw. Since then, the massive predator has taken out a ...

WWE Backlash 2016: Feuds Guaranteed to Increase Excitement for Event

Posted by Kevin Wong On September - 2 - 2016
Every since the brand split, SmackDown has evolved from a sports entertainment show into a wrestling show. There's less glitz and fewer high spots. Instead, there has been more emphasis on the old-school storytelling that has been effective for over a more than a century. It starts with commentator Mauro Ranallo, who (gasp) calls the wrestling moves during the match rather than focusing exclusively on the storylines. We have in-ring promos that are less scripted and more natural. The overall focus is on the wrestlers rather than the metadrama of Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan or any other authority figure. The rivalries are ...

Bray Wyatt Will Revive Randy Orton’s Character in WWE Backlash 2016 Feud

Posted by Graham GSM Matthews On September - 2 - 2016
WWE Backlash 2016 will feature of slew of exciting encounters, but perhaps no match on the September 11 card is more intriguing than the first one-on-one encounter between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt. On the latest edition of SmackDown Live, Wyatt conducted a "Sermon for the Serpent," calling out Orton and challenging him to a match at the pending pay-per-view, to which The Viper accepted. Thus, the stage has been set for a match that has been many years in the making. Wyatt initially arrived on the WWE scene in the summer of 2013, and since then, he and Orton have seldom crossed ...

Ryback Is Right: WWE Missed the Boat with the Big Guy

Posted by Ryan Dilbert On September - 2 - 2016
WWE never allowed Ryback to shift out of neutral. A lack of commitment and a series of hurried tweaks to his gimmick made The Big Guy's tenure with the company one marked by missed opportunities. It's easy to understand why Ryback was so frustrated when he left; WWE tripped him up. Ryback addressed his issues with his former employer on his new podcast, Conversations with The Big Guy (NSFW language). This was the first time the powerhouse opened up about his contentious WWE exit. Among the most eye-catching things he said had to do with his booking and his place on the company hierarchy. He said, "I feel I've never been ...
Roman Reigns has been named the top wrestler in the world by Pro Wrestling Illustrated, and many WWE fans would be hard-pressed to find a more controversial fact right now. The controversy never seems to end with him. 411 Mania reported the news, and now fans are left to digest it all. To be fair, PWI judged Reigns based on his run from mid-2015 to about the same time this year, which accounts for a good bit of main event booking. But considering the men who filled out the top five, Reigns' spot could be considered even more controversial. IWGP heavyweight champion Kazuchika Okada ...
WWE fans who need a reminder of the stirring power of a well-told story in the ring should sit down and soak in Brian Kendrick vs. Kota Ibushi. During a week where Kevin Owens reached his career apex and Sheamus vs. Cesaro continued their hard-hitting best-of-seven series, it was the Cruiserweight Classic's quarterfinals that created the most resonating clash. A 37-year-old veteran and a spring-legged Japanese star many casual fans have never heard of simply tore down the house. The Cruiserweight Classic tournament continues to be more than just an exhibition of international talent; it has been one of WWE's most consistently ...

Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns, the PWI 500 and More from the Backlash Mailbag

Posted by Alfred Konuwa On September - 1 - 2016
On Monday's Raw, Kevin Owens won the WWE Universal Championship, making Triple H a 15-time world champion.            Kevin on Earth Hopefully Owens will be able to stay healthy as a world champion, as there is a lot of potential here. If Triple H and The Authority stay out of his way, Owens can be a dominant, tough-guy world champion in the mold of a Mark Henry, whose Hall of Pain run helped bolster SmackDown ratings to record numbers on Syfy, per James Caldwell of PWTorch. Owens is a strong wrestler who can cut great promos on a weekly ...
A new crop of WWE NXT stars, from Tye Dillinger to Aliyah, is set to compete for spots on center stage. After a flood of talent left the developmental brand in the July draft, NXT has since had to reshuffle its deck. That process has opened up opportunities for a guy like Dillinger to claim a more prominent position. The Perfect 10 has outgrown his midcarder status, something he made clear again on Wednesday's NXT. NXT's return to Full Sail University after its trip to Brooklyn, New York, also saw other prospects impress, too. The 21-year-old Aliyah flashed great potential in a loss on ...
