Black Stars of Professional Wrestling: Looking Back After 10 Years
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
Back in 1999, a revolutionary book came onto the publishing scene that chronicled African-American wrestlers who were lost in the archives. It's entitled “Black Stars of Professional Wrestling”, written by Julian L.D. Shabazz. Fast forward to the present, where the pages of history will open once again with the updated version of a book that's sure to educate more than a few.
I actually had a chance to interview Julian about 10 years ago to discuss the original “Black Stars of Professional Wrestling” for a column that I did known as “In the Black”, which originated from a site called Chair ...
WWE RAW 3/21/11 Review
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
Back with my second RAW review.
RAW live from Pittsburgh, PA.
JR will start out the show. Never mind, it’s Michaels Cole dressed in a JR costume. This is surprisingly amusing. Maybe it’s just because RAW was so bad last week. Cole just accidentally ripped off his microphone and a deafening “YOU SUCK!” chant drowns him out. Cole then retreats into the “Cole Mine.” “I’m in the fortress of aptitude and attitude.” More like the Fortress of Craptitude and Assitude amiright? Anyone?... Guys? Let’s move on.
It’s time to play the game. Triple H out to talk. Just saw some naïve kid’s sign ...
WWE Raw Review: March 21, 2011
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
Due to the recent controversy surrounding the use of the term "wrestling" in anything involving the WWE, all references to this will be replaced with the entertainment equivalent. I’m watching in HD this week! On a 42-inch screen! The excitement is overwhelming. Please enjoy this HD review. The show kicked off with Justin Roberts introducing J.R! Now, forgive me, I should really have listened properly when he said the voice of the WWE. I don’t think I’ve ever been more gutted when it was just Cole doing a horrendous imitation of the legendary commentator. I can’t believe I was sucked ...
WWE Parallel Paths: Big Evil and Diesel, the Tag Team That Could Have Been
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
During my commute this morning, my phone's music shuffle landed on a WWE theme that really got me thinking.
Many tag teams in WWE have come and gone. Some have been extremely cohesive. Kendrick and London, Brothers of Destruction, The Quebecers, E&C, Men on a Mission, Legion of Doom, Demolition, the list goes on. Some have found massive success getting jumbled together with someone entirely random. Booker T/Goldust, RVD/Kane, even JeriShow and ShowMiz had a certain something special.
However, one tag team that never had a chance together would have featured two men who were in WWE at the same time for a while, but at different ...
WWE: What Happened to the Intercontinental Title?
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
I touched upon this a little bit back in my Raw review last night, but what the hell has happened to the Intercontinental Championship? It really wasn't that long ago when winning the Intercontinental belt was a very big deal. Plenty of well-known wrestlers made their leap to the upper card by winning the second-biggest title in the game. Hell, there were times when the matches for the IC title were much better than the world title ones. Bret Hart, The Rock, Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, HHH and Randy Orton all used the Intercontinental title as ...
The Death of Wrestling: Abandoning Tradition for the Bright Lights of Hollywood
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
World Wide Wrestling Federation, World Championship Wrestling, World Wrestling Federation, World Wrestling Entertainment, National Wrestling Alliance, Extreme Championship Wrestling. All are bound by the one word and the one tradition, wrestling. And yet, coming out of Connecticut now is the dictate that WWE is no longer a wrestling company. It is an entertainment company with many branches, including international movie studios and three publications. Wrestling is no longer acceptable. WWE is not alone in this new phenomenon. As has been reported by Lords of Pain, the most recent TNA Impact show had just nine minutes and 58 seconds of wrestling in ...
WWE: What Was Creative Thinking When They Wrote Raw Last Night?
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
We are now 12 days from the "Grandaddy of Them All," WrestleMania. As we have seen the past few weeks, the road to WrestleMania is used to generate huge excitement for the event. But one word can sum up Raw last night: Terrible. This is the type of Raw you would expect in the middle of June—months removed from WrestleMania and months until SummerSlam. From the beginning, you could tell this wasn't going to be a high-quality Raw, when you had Michael Cole coming down to the ring dressed as good ole JR. It's interesting that they pulled this off, ...
John Cena the Experience: A New Respect for the Man Who Makes Wishes Come True
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
It's no shocker that the Internet Wrestling Community (IWC) despises John Cena. I used to be one of them. However, in the last several months, my dislike of Cena has done a complete 180. What has caused this, you might ask? Well, first off, for those of you who read my articles, you know that I have a two-and-a-half year old son who just recently started watching wrestling. Though I've tried to guide him along the way to admire greats like Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho (sadly through DVD and not live on RAW), the pull of Cena is just ...
WWE: Has the Miz’s Fame Gone To His Head?
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
He may be one of the most outspoken and controversial WWE champions in history, but on the March 21 episode of Monday Night RAW, The Miz went too far when he unveiled his custom-made version of his WWE championship belt. The custom belt sees the WWE logo turned upside down to make it look like an "M," which of course stands for The Miz. In my opinion, this new custom-made WWE championship belt is a huge disgrace. The WWE logo is an iconic logo, much like Coca-Cola's or the music group Chicago's (one of my favorite bands growing up). "Mr. ...
Wrestlemania 27: Triple H vs. Undertaker a Clash of Titans or Just Forced?
On March - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
Each year at Wrestlemania, the fans expect a classic, a match that will stand the test of time. It is an epic battle, composed of two titans. Last year, Undertaker and Shawn Michaels filled that spot. It was a clash of magnificent proportions. From its build-up to the promos to the match itself, their battle told a remarkable story and gave Michaels an honorable departure.
This year’s Wrestlemania seeks to fill that slot with another set of titans: Triple H and Undertaker. On paper it seems plausible that the pairing of these two legends will make for an exciting and standard-breaking ...
