‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper, WWE Star, Dies at Age 61

Posted by Joseph Zucker On July - 31 - 2015
WWE Hall of Famer Roderick Toombs, aka "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, 61, died Friday, the company confirmed. "Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world," said Vince McMahon, WWE's chairman and chief executive officer. "I extend my deepest condolences to his family." WWE Superstars Kevin Owens and John Cena were among the many who eulogized the former Intercontinental champion: While Hulk Hogan can lay claim to helping WWE explode in the mid-1980s, that explosion was in no small part thanks to Piper playing the perfect bad guy to Hogan's all-conquering ...

Breaking Down the Best and Worst of the WWE for Week of July 27

Posted by Ryan Dilbert On July - 31 - 2015
WWE's oft-neglected roster members nabbed the spotlight this week. On Monday's Raw, the recently energized Divas division showed off two of its most talented women. On NXT, tag team wrestling was back in vogue. And at just about every turn, WWE did well to further the feud between Cesaro and Kevin Owens. When it came time to showcase the company's top champion, however, WWE failed. Seth Rollins lost both a singles match and a tag match in the span of a few days. He continues to be treated like someone who isn't quite deserving of the world title in his grasp. At least ...
WWE's best social media featured unexpected mash-ups, collisions of worlds and a welcoming of famous faces to the wrestling domain. Twitter and Instagram were there to catch Seth Rollins invading The Daily Show once more. A well-traveled video featured WWE Superstars inserted into Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The week's collection of shareable WWE stuff also included a parody video touching on the Hulk Hogan controversy and LeBron James' offering up his favorites of the squared circle. We start first with John Cena and the broken nose heard around the Internet. On Monday's Raw, a knee from Rollins smashed Cena's nose into an unsettling sight. WWE hasn't ...
Tag teams dominated center stage on the latest edition of WWE NXT, allowing some lesser-known prospects to make their marks by way of armbars and stomps to the ribs. Wednesday's NXT saw Simon Gotch continue to gain momentum. His offense keeps evolving and adding fun elements. That's helped him to emerge as one of the bigger stars of a crowded tag team division.  Scott Dawson's hard-nosed style netted him some attention as well. Chad Gable made mat wrestling more entertaining than scientific.  As several duos push toward title contention, NXT prospects look to prove that they need to be positioned higher on the ladder and ...

WWE SummerSlam 2015: 4-Hour Format Calls for Return of Iron Man Match

Posted by Graham GSM Matthews On July - 31 - 2015
After days of rumors running rampant, WWE officially confirmed this past Monday that this year's SummerSlam pay-per-view will be four hours long, making it the only event other than WrestleMania to share that length in the company's illustrious history. With this being the first installment since 2008 to be held outside of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, WWE has made SummerSlam a major priority this year. That's been apparent with all the festivities scheduled for that weekend in Brooklyn, along with the decision to bring back Undertaker far sooner than expected. However, that extra hour shouldn't be put to waste—and we're not ...

Seth Rollins: Projecting Remaining Longevity of WWE Title Reign

Posted by Aaron Bower On July - 31 - 2015
Seth Rollins' immediate future as WWE World Heavyweight Champion looks probably safer than it's been for a long time at the moment. With a likely battle against John Cena at SummerSlam scheduled on August 23 and very little chance of Rollins' enjoyable reign coming to an end there, the news that Cena suffered a broken nose on Raw this past week only further strengthens Rollins' grip on the title. Why? If Cena is unlikely to compete at SummerSlam—and judging by the news coming from WrestlingInc.com this week that Cena has had surgery, that could well be the case—it's almost impossible that WWE would ...
Seth Rollins' judgment day is upon us. At Battleground, the egotistical and braggadocious WWE World Heavyweight champion will face the man he robbed of the title back at WrestleMania 31, Brock Lesnar, in the biggest main event match since that fateful night in March. Rollins has been able to dodge the attack of The Beast Incarnate to this point, but without the protection of J&J Security and backup of Director of Operations Kane, there will be nowhere to run or hide when he stands across the squared circle from the most dominant force in professional wrestling. Speaking of dominant forces, Kevin Owens will ...

WWE’s Best and Worst Booking Decisions for the Week of July 13

Posted by Travis Wakeman On July - 18 - 2015
As WWE heads toward its next big event, Battleground on Sunday, we take a look back at the week that was. On Monday Night Raw, Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins engaged in a contract signing for their upcoming WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. In addition to that, Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Sasha Banks all came up from NXT to appear on the show, creating an aura of excitement that hasn't been seen within the Divas division in quite some time. On SmackDown, The New Day picked up a victory in tag team action over The Lucha Dragons, and Roman Reigns and Bray ...

WWE Superstar of the Week for July 18

Posted by The Doctor Chris Mueller On July - 18 - 2015
The Superstars and Divas of WWE always manage to produce some entertaining moments every week, but the last seven days had a few more than usual. With the build for Battleground taking up most of the valuable TV time, it came as a big surprise when some of the things that stuck out the most had nothing to do with the pay-per-view. Before we get to the main attraction, let's take a look at some of the people who deserve recognition.   Honorable Mentions: Cesaro and Rusev Cesaro has been killing it over the past few weeks. He has produced several incredible matches and managed ...

WWE Programming’s Best Matches for Week of July 18

Posted by Brad Jones On July - 18 - 2015
Last week, you named Cesaro vs. John Cena from Raw as the best match of the last seven days, narrowly beating out Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens at Beast in the East by just a couple of hundred votes. Interestingly enough, the latter match had months of build behind it while the former was a surprise on the night. Conventional logic says a longer build would result in a more satisfying match, but the way the voting went last week suggests otherwise. Regardless, we've seen the effect a great match can have on a wrestler play out over the week that followed. ...
