Overusing the Shield Has Hurt WWE’s Overall Product
On May - 4 - 2013
The Shield has been one of the WWE’s few unqualified successes over the past year, but the overuse of this group has been to the detriment of the rest of the roster. In turn, the overall quality of the television program the company produces has suffered. This should not be mistaken as a comment on the three Superstars’—Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose—ability. All three have maximized the opportunities presented to them, and they should go on to be top names for many years to come. Nor should this be seen as a criticism of the way The Shield ...

Dolph Ziggler Talks About Frustration with His Spot in the WWE
On April - 6 - 2013
WWE Superstar Dolph Ziggler joined the WrestleMania promotion tour yesterday and spoke openly about his frustration with his current position on the WWE roster. Ziggler talked to BetweenTheRopes.com and responded to a question about where he thought he might have been on the card this year with the following: I thought maybe there would be a chance that I would be world champion already and looking forward to an opponent—maybe Brock Lesnar or Rock, but also, at the same time, I’ve been involved with several different issues with Chris Jericho. Ziggler then commented on how prepared he felt for a ...

5 Bizarre Permanent Departures from WWE Television
On March - 9 - 2013
With the sad loss of Paul Bearer (William Moody) in the last few days, it will forever be enshrined in WWE folklore that his character passed away after being left in an industrial freezer. Such a devilishly devious end to the legendary manager’s time with the company is rather appropriate—especially as his end was at the hands of Kane, who Bearer brought to the WWE so many years ago. Of course, this is not the only memorable departure Paul Bearer has had from the WWE. He had a short timeout before the arrival of Kane after Undertaker burnt Bearer’s face ...
Elimination Chamber’s Success Highlights WWE’s Problems with Gimmick Matches
On February - 16 - 2013
WWE’s gimmick matches are considered to be devalued compared to a decade ago, yet the Elimination Chamber has succeeded in keeping its prestige. It is difficult to pinpoint when gimmick matches started to be thought of as inferior to previous outings. However there are several factors which coincided with the drop in gimmick match’s status, and these could all have lead to them becoming less important. One often-quoted reason is the installation of gimmick pay-per-views. This has meant that the arrival of a high-profile gimmick event is no longer a surprise. The matches no longer signal that this is the ...
WWE Must Keep The Shield Out of the Royal Rumble Match
On January - 26 - 2013
The group known as The Shield has no place in the Royal Rumble match, and the WWE needs to keep them out of it. These three men—Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins—claim to have entered the WWE with a purpose. They have vowed to subdue the injustices that they believe happen in the company every week. So The Shield would be significantly diverting from their ethos if they were to compete in the Rumble itself. Arguably, the group could enter in order to stop others from winning. However they would have far more freedom running in and blindsiding competitors ...
7 Wrestlers Who Put over Younger Talent and Made the WWE Great
On January - 19 - 2013
Many of the WWE’s greatest eras have developed by way of a few experienced wrestlers losing to—or “putting over”—younger talent, who then went on to become megastars. Often, the biggest names in the wrestling industry struggle to let go of their position and want to be on top forever. This holds up-and-coming performers back. The fallout to such a situation is only felt a few years later when there is a distinct lack of main event talent. This was the case in the WWE during the mid-1990s and late 2000s. Athletes who help the next generation by putting others over ...
Jerry Lawler’s Commentary May Signal the Future for Dolph Ziggler in WWE
On January - 12 - 2013
Lost in the excitement of The Rock’s encounter with CM Punk was an important development in the establishment of Dolph Ziggler as a potential World Heavyweight Championship contender. Unusually, this did not come after Ziggler’s performance and subsequent loss to John Cena. Instead, the words of color commentator Jerry Lawler may well be the catalyst to the realignment of Ziggler’s character, which would allow him to go on and be seen as a success beyond Vickie Guerrero and everything that has come before. This small but powerful comment was inserted to establish the importance of Ziggler’s speed advantage over his ...
WWE Should Open a WCW Wing of the Hall of Fame
On January - 5 - 2013
It is almost unthinkable that World Championship Wrestling has been gone for more than a decade and that the number of fans who experienced the Monday Night Wars firsthand is steadily dwindling, but that is the burden of time moving on. Now the great southern wrestling company is a distant memory. Its exploits are relegated to clips and special DVD compilations remembering what used to be. WCW has become a footnote in the history of WWE and can be seen as Vince McMahon’s ultimate victory. As time passes, though, the importance of the Monday Night Wars diminishes. The whole ...
