WWE Payback Preview; Cena over Ryback, Jericho over Punk & More!

Posted by John Canton On June - 15 - 2013
This Sunday night on pay-per-view, World Wrestling Entertainment presents the first ever Payback event. I'm not sure why they went with Payback or why they couldn't bring back an old name like Backlash. I guess it doesn't really matter. Since Payback is not a show with a theme, most of the matches on the show lack any kind of gimmick. The only one with a stipulation on it is the main event Three Stages of Hell match between John Cena and Ryback for the WWE title. What's interesting about the card is that of the eight matches on the show ...
This column is a monthly feature that looks ahead to WWE's next pay-per-view offering. I usually do them immediately after the SmackDown tapings, but didn't want to mention spoilers until after that program aired. The questions are from me. The answers are obviously from me. This is different from the pay-per-view preview that I do before the events because those are predictions of matches after seeing all of the television leading up to it. The questions in this column are more about the build up to the event as we head into the ...

TNA Slammiversary Preview: Bully Ray Will Retain World Title

Posted by John Canton On June - 1 - 2013
This Sunday night, TNA Wrestling will be holding its Slammiversary pay-per-view event. Slammiversary marks 11 years since Total Nonstop Action began.I've been watching the company from the beginning, although there definitely times when I lost interest along the way. For the most part, I watch Impact weekly and do my best to keep up with the stories.Earlier this year, TNA eliminated eight live pay-per-view events. Of course, TNA says publicly that it was a positive because it will allow them to build up to the four pay-per-views in an even better way, but really it's an admission that the pay-per-view ...

WWE Extreme Rules Preview: Brock Lesnar Should Beat Triple H

Posted by John Canton On May - 18 - 2013
It is WWE Extreme Rules time. I remember last year's event fondly. The top matches like John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar, CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho and Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan were all great. The undercard was just okay, although Brodus Clay beating Dolph Ziggler in four minutes hurt my head. It was the best pay-per-view of 2012. If I made a list of best WWE pay-per-views ever, it might be in the top 15 or 20. It was that good. This year? I don't expect it to be as good. For one thing, the storylines heading into the show are ...

20 Questions & Answers About WWE Extreme Rules: Will Cena Lose?

Posted by John Canton On May - 9 - 2013
This column is going to be a monthly feature going forward. I did this for WrestleMania two weeks before the show. The questions are from me. The answers are obviously from me. This is different from the pay-per-view preview that I do before the events because those are predictions of matches and what I think will happen. The questions in this column are more about the build-up to the event as we head into the final week of television before Extreme Rules. There is still some predicting going on, but not that much. Here's ...

WWE WrestleMania 29 Preview: John Cena’s Time Is Now…Again

Posted by John Canton On April - 6 - 2013
This Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, WWE presents WrestleMania 29. It's the company's biggest show of the year. With a reported $11 million gate, it's already the most successful WWE event ever in terms of ticket sales. I don't need to sell the event to you considering that WWE has run approximately 473 video packages about the show in the last month. If you want to purchase the show in HD on pay-per-view, it will cost you $69.95 in USA or Canada (non-HD is $59.95). That's the most expensive WWE show ever. There's also a one-hour pre-show ...

Wrestling Fans Can Help Rebuild Scott Hall’s Life Together

Posted by John Canton On March - 9 - 2013
A little over a month ago, I shared the story about how wrestling legend Jake Roberts was finally on the right path thanks to the help of his friend Diamond Dallas Page and his yoga program. The story is very inspiring. It's the kind of thing that makes me proud to be a fan of the pro wrestling business because it teaches us what kind of great men and women are putting their bodies on the line on a regular basis.I was honored to hear from Jake and DDP about it with DDP saying it was his favorite article ...

WWE Elimination Chamber Preview: The Rock Will Defeat CM Punk Again

Posted by John Canton On February - 16 - 2013
Welcome to the Elimination Chamber Preview. There are seven announced matches on this show including the pre-show match. The only surprising thing about the card is that Dolph Ziggler isn't in a match on the show. He's a guy that many people consider to be one of the best all around performers in the company, he's carrying the Money in the Bank briefcase and he will likely be a World Champion in the near future. Why isn't he in a match? Does his absence mean that he could cash in the briefcase on Sunday night? Could happen. I'm not expecting ...

Evaluating the Current State of WWE’s Tag Team Division

Posted by John Canton On February - 16 - 2013
This Sunday's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view is another example of WWE having a strong roster. The main event matches are usually excellent while the midcard matches are full of talented people ready to break through when the opportunity presents itself. I like the WWE roster a lot, and one aspect I particularly enjoy is the tag team division. I think there were two different eras for the tag team division where it was at its absolute best. In the late 1980s to early 1990s, there were many outstanding teams like the Hart Foundation, the British Bulldogs, ...

WWE Royal Rumble Preview: The Rock & John Cena Will Be Big Winners

Posted by John Canton On January - 26 - 2013
It's Royal Rumble time. There are five announced matches on this show, including one match that is for the pre-show. It doesn't shock me that only four matches are announced for the actual pay-per-view portion of the show when you consider the amount of time given to the matches. The Rumble match itself usually goes about 60 minutes (give or take), I expect CM Punk vs. The Rock to get over 30 minutes counting the video package, intros and the match. Then when you think about the tag title match and the World Title match, both of them could be ...
