WWE Intensive Care: How to Transcend Media Outlets Without Venturing Too Far

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On November - 11 - 2011
I think we can all agree that Vince McMahon is decent at running a business. However, most of his ideas for ventures outside of professional wrestling have only been good on paper.  The WBF (World Bodybuilding Federation), which I had only heard about recently, was apparently a WWE sponsored bodybuilding organization that flopped.  The XFL was supposed to revolutionize American Football with an alternative to the NFL, but that also flopped. WWE's movie studio, one would think, would be a perfect idea.  WWE's main product of live theater on a weekly basis gives its most popular on-screen characters full-on scripts to work from, directors, big ...

WWE Role Reversal, Vol.3: How the Y2J Bug Has Affected the IWC’s Health

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On April - 25 - 2011
See below for past installments in my Role Reversal series of articles, a history of where this series has gone and where else this series could go. Thanks, enjoy and feel absolutely free to debate to your heart's content. If I'm going to blaspheme hard enough to say CM Punk shouldn't be pigeonholed as a natural heel, as I did in Vol. 1, I feel compelled to give similar spotlight to one Christopher Keith Irvine, more commonly known as "The Lionheart" Chris Jericho. Many say he was born to play a heel. Me? I say it's a good fit, but sometimes he tried too hard. For ...

WWE: Five Positive Counterpoints to WWE’s Rebrand/Language Changes

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On April - 16 - 2011
Recently, there's been incredible buzz here at Bleacher Report and other such sites regarding WWE's decision to eliminate the word "wrestling" from their name, retitle themselves simply "WWE" and even issue an approved list of terminology that's acceptable and not acceptable by voice-over workers employed by them. For the most part, the response to this news has been very negative among longtime fans, and to some extent, I can't say I disagree. I've been a "wrestling fan" since the early 90s, so I can appreciate the fervor in fans who hate the idea that the "wrestling" aspect of their favorite "wrestling" ...

WWE: RIP Nexus…June 2010-April 2011?

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On March - 31 - 2011
I've been writing for this website semi-regularly since last July, and I was composing an article this past week when I needed to consult WWEShop.com for some image or another.  Upon visiting, I noticed they had a ton of items at ridiculous clearance prices and I decided to treat myself to a cheap purchase. Laugh if you must, but I placed an order for a Nexus long-sleeve shirt for around 11 bucks (shipping included), with the cool "shattered news-clippings" logo on the front, "We Are One" on the back and of course, the trademark Nexus logo on the right bicep. After placing the order and mistakenly discovering ...
During my commute this morning, my phone's music shuffle landed on a WWE theme that really got me thinking. Many tag teams in WWE have come and gone.  Some have been extremely cohesive.  Kendrick and London, Brothers of Destruction, The Quebecers, E&C, Men on a Mission, Legion of Doom, Demolition, the list goes on.  Some have found massive success getting jumbled together with someone entirely random.  Booker T/Goldust, RVD/Kane, even JeriShow and ShowMiz had a certain something special. However, one tag team that never had a chance together would have featured two men who were in WWE at the same time for a while, but at different ...
As a follow up to my article proposing that particular heel be turned face in order to reinvent him with the fans, after watching the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw, I realized another possibility that I didn't want to sit on.  Again, not my typical article fare, but if I'm attempting to be an author, it couldn't hurt to demonstrate my creativity when it comes to booking angles for WWE. Ever since they first showed up, Nexus' manpower and style reminded many of the popular WCW stable, the New World Order.  However, their unified attire and numbers game were really the only things ...

WWE: A Business Like Any Diner or Hospital, It Needs Healthy Food and Patients

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On February - 17 - 2011
—ALLEGORY: Similar to the SATIRE articles you've seen, this article is meant mainly to present allegories that symbolize how WWE operates, so while I'm not an insider and I've never worked in the industry, this piece is meant to place emphasis on an obvious aspect or two of the business side of things that many of us tend to forget This week, I posted an article offering a counterpoint to The Rock's promo on Monday Night Raw, to which many people disagreed.   I would like to go on record and fully acknowledge the possibility that The Rock's comments towards Miz may indeed be extraordinarily ...
On October 18, 2010, I posted an article about NXT, in which I pointed out how great a move it was for WWE to be nurturing a crop of new faces and rookies, because in doing so they had a chance to reestablish an important hierarchy that had been lost. If you like, check out that article here:  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/474721-wwe-nxt-a-lost-chance-to-maintain-superstars-much-needed-momentum Incidentally, this isn't meant as a response to Amsterdam's article on DiBiase, seen here:  http://bleacherreport.com/articles/602229-priceless-has-the-career-of-ted-dibase-jr-hit-rock-bottom  It's more relating to progressing thoughts from my own article. Anyway, by hierarchy, I mean the separation between "superstars" and "jobbers," or in other words, the unspoken and yet somehow confirmed "ranking system" that set the "most ...
Less than 24 hours ago, a fabled hero of yesteryear—The Rock—returned to Monday Night Raw after a seven-year absence. I won't lie. I was extremely excited to see him back—a lot of us were. However, despite entertaining wrestling fans the best way he knows how, I found myself asking questions and having critical issues with some of the things he said and did. Let's break down some of the highlights and please keep in mind, they may not be in chronological order. The moment's a bit blurry in my mind, but here are some of the main things I remember that deserve the ...

WWE: 6 Possible Storylines for Undertaker, Starting on 2/21/11

Posted by Marc Mattaliano On February - 10 - 2011
Many of us, here at Bleacher Report, have tried to figure out the mystery of the 2/21/11 promos seen on Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown.  At first, we all freaked out that it could be "The Icon," the man they call Sting. After this past Monday's updated promo, ending with the same Johnny Cash tune that promoted a confrontation between Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania, some of the Sting buzz has died a little.  Some hopefuls are staying hopeful, some fatalists are laying their dreams to rest, but of course, there are those optimists, like yours truly, who attempt ...
