WWE and Linda McMahon: How Politics and Wrestling Mix

Posted by Matthew Maloney On November - 2 - 2010
As many WWE wrestling fans have gathered by now, CEO Linda McMahon is running for the US Senate in this year's US midterm elections as a Republican candidate. Up until now, however, much of the press and TV coverage that has appeared in the national and international media has viewed this from a purely political or "mainstream" perspective and any mention of her WWE history has barely scratched the surface of it. Many news reports simply describe her as a "businesswoman." As a result, this piece is just going to be shedding light on her Senate run from an ex-wrestling ...

Flashback: Wrestlemania X-Seven

Posted by Matthew Maloney On August - 23 - 2009
On April 1, 2001 in Houston, Texas, the WWF hosted in my esteemed (okay, let's face it, probably worthless) opinion the finest event/card in its amazing history. Packed to the rafters with 68,000 baying fans (breaking the attendance record for the Reliant in the process), Wrestlemania 17 is widely considered by many, the closing curtain and last hurrah of the so-called Attitude Era. I've since personally come to see the event as a symbolic ending to the last time I could say wrestling was mainstream enough to be considered 'cool' (or one of the last times I could admit being a fan!); the beginning of a slow and painful decline for ...

Exclusive: McMahon-Russo Plot Revealed

Posted by Matthew Maloney On August - 9 - 2009
I was instructed to be on level three of a nearby carpark at exactly 3.30 p.m. yesterday.  The piece of paper with this court message, dredged from words and letters from various magazine clippings, gave me no clue as to whom...or what to look for when I had gotten there. Often its only a hunch, an instinct that leads to the big payoffs in my profession and in this regard, yesterday's date with destiny was no different...It was simply a hunch that brought me there on that wet afternoon. As an aspiring investigative journalist, I had by now become well aware of the stakes on the line in these kinds of ...
The WWE is a big man's world.  The Khalis and Kozlovs of this world seem to get a free pass to the main event scene. Along the way, more than a few of the little guys get thrown around a ring or bearhugged into oblivion in a frantic effort to get them over. It's a tried and tested booker's strategy done since the WWE's earliest days.   A pity about the wrestling though. It has long been known in wrestling circles that Vince McMahon is a strong adherent of the "bigger is better" philosophy. Numerous steroid scandals, which have engulfed the WWE, have shown Vince to be anything but an ...

Flashback: Survivor Series 2000

Posted by Matthew Maloney On July - 17 - 2009
This flashback is inspired by a strange and wonderful event this morning. While rooting through the family videotape collection earlier (yes, there was "home entertainment" before DVDs and YouTube young'uns) I stumbled upon something I had forgotten about long ago, deep, deep inside the back of the cabinet. Covered in cobwebs and shrouded in dust lay my one and only WWF video―Survivor Series 2000. So old is this video that the price tag on the front states a price of £16.99, which for those of you who don't know, we haven't used pounds here since Monica Lewinsky was famous. So, like an Enid Blyton novel, I eagerly put my ...

The Great Khali: The Greatest Wrestler Of All Time

Posted by Matthew Maloney On July - 7 - 2009
Where were you fellow wrestling fan when The Great Khali first strode into your lives? In front of the TV eating dinner with your mom, dads, uncles, grand-uncles, second cousins, nephews, sons, first cousin/wife? Was it while waving your pitchfork along with the other friendly yokels while watching Smackdown live at a truckstop? Or, for the younger amongst us, was it at the cinema watching another critically accalimed Adam Sandler movie? I know I will always remember where I was—in a hospital fighting for my life against what the doctors had told me was a terminal condition—terminal cancer. For those long hard months as I lay there unable ...
