Pro Wrestling: A State of Independence

Posted by Paul Austin On July - 2 - 2010
It's Friday, so all I have to do is flick on my television set and surf through the channels, and eventually I'll find WWE SmackDown! and get my wrestling fix for free. No questions asked, no thought required, and all is well with the world. Life is easy, isn't it? What's more is I can stumble online tomorrow and pontificate about the previous night's episode as an unpaid critic, and I still won't have to think too deeply about the subject. This is just as well, as the industry is a lot more complicated than most of us think it is, and ...

Bryan Danielson vs. The Miz

Posted by Paul Austin On July - 1 - 2010
By now, most of those interested have read Danielson's blog on his release, but for those who haven't, here it is repeated below: "WWE has come to terms on the release of NXT first season rookie Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) as of today June 11, 2010. We wish Daniel Bryan the best in all future endeavors."  Posted by WWE .com "Since this statement was released I've been bombarded with messages asking me if it's real, and by now I'm sure most people know it is. WWE is very serious about adhering to their PG guidelines, ...

WWE NXT: An Idea Whose Time Has Gone?

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 30 - 2010
I have to confess, I was never happy with the concept of NXT, a faux-reality show that would take a sizable chunk of the WWE development roster to pit them against each other and give them a planned 17 weeks to compete in silly challenges in order to win an already booked bout at a PPV. The original concept was to produce three series a year of 17 episodes. Not only did I question the concept, but also as to whether they could produce 24 wrestlers a year worthy of high-profile television exposure. As the "Nexus" attempt to convince us that they ...

WWE Raw: Money in the Bank…Who Is Going To Win?

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 29 - 2010
Last night Rob Zombie revealed the eight Raw superstars who are scheduled to compete in a Money in the Bank match, at the PPV of the same name. So I'm sure that today a million WWE watchers are trying to figure out who is going to win, and I thought if it was good enough for them why shouldn't I have a go? The eight Superstars announced by Zombie are Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, Evan Bourne, United States Champion The Miz, Ted DiBiase, Chris Jericho, and Edge. But there can only be one winner. Now there are several ways to make ...

1PW: Life Beyond WWE, TNA and ROH

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 28 - 2010
A funny thing happened to me yesterday. I was reading an article on here, and saw a comment about Hurricane Helms, and somebody had told me the day before that he was wrestling at "Pain in the Park" this August, so I told the person about it, and went off to YouTube to see if there were any trailers for the event. The funny part wasn't that I didn't find any trailers, the funny thing, or at least it seemed strange to me, was that I found the official One Pro Wrestling (1PW) YouTube channel , where I discovered that many of ...

Money in the Bank PPV: Is WWE Ruining a Perfect Gimmick?

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 27 - 2010
In 1972, British wrestler Kendo Nagasaki invented a new angle for a wrestling match when he introduced a ladder to the squared circle. This concept was then taken to Stampede Wrestling in Calgary. Then in 1983, Stampede Wrestling held a ladder match where Bret Hart faced off against Bad News Brown. Hart went on to join the WWF and suggested this type of match to promoter Vince McMahon. The gimmick achieved its current popularity in the then-WWF. Over those years the gimmick was deployed in many different ways, and in 2005 it morphed again, when Chris Jericho (kayfabe) pitched the idea of a Money in ...

Who Attacked The Undertaker: The Alternative Suspects

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 26 - 2010
No true and complete list of suspects for an attack on The Undertaker could be complete without a mention of Paul Bearer, his spooky and ghoulish former manager. Ohhh yyyes! However, as this list is neither complete, nor true, I figured I'd leave him ensconced in his cement filled crypt, for the time being. So without further delay I offer you the first alternative suspect. Theodore Marvin "Ted" DiBiase, Jr. I initially wrote his name out in full, so that I could point out that it's Theodore. And it's long. Then make a lame joke about the current SmackDown! general manager. Then I had ...

In WWE, What Comes First, Sports or Entertainment?

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 25 - 2010
In 2002, on the back of the success of the Rock in the 1999 movie The Mummy, World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. created a subsidiary called WWE Studios to develop and produce feature films. Initial reactions were positive, especially with the co-production of their first movie, The Scorpion King, with the character again being played by The Rock, which turned out to be a moderate success, despite mixed critical reception. Since then WWE Studios has received mixed reaction from the fans. Most people, aside from really die-hard fans, would have to admit that the majority of the 10 movies that the studio has produced, ...

Chris Jericho: Contract Talks Progressing Smoothly

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 24 - 2010
Yes, it has been that long! It has been almost three years since Chris Jericho returned to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), and as such, it's new contract time! There has been a lot of speculation recently; will he stay, will he leave, what about Fozzy, and what about his new ABC prime-time game show, Downfall? But the fogs have cleared, and now these questions can be answered. The first six episodes of Downfall are in the bag, and if it's renewed, it will continue to be taped in blocks, so it really doesn't interfere with his schedule. Furthermore, Chris, and WWE, are happy for ...

What Is the Purpose TNA Wrestling?

Posted by Paul Austin On June - 23 - 2010
What is the purpose of TNA wrestling? What does it exist for? What market is it aiming for? As every new episode of iMPACT! airs every Thursday night the answers become less and less clear. One minute I see a series of famous faces, from a bygone era, and find myself asking is this a retirement home for wrestling veterans, and then the next minute I see a couple of talented young athletes put on a hot bout, and ask myself is this the future of wrestling? Is this WCW revisited, or is it a WWE wannabe? One of the latest rumors doing the rounds is ...
