Much was said at the 2011 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Let’s take a look at three powerful statements that settled historic and recent debates…or gave rise to newer, unresolved issues. “Thank you for letting Daddy go out and be a wrestler.” These were a few of the heartwarming words spoken from Shawn Michaels to his children during his induction into the 2011 class of the WWE Hall of Fame. Shawn encapsulated what it meant to be a wrestler, and I will always appreciate his dedication to his craft because I, along with many other fans, were the beneficiaries of his ...

WWE WrestleMania 27: Divas Are Powerful, Smart, and Sexy…Really?

Posted by tiffanie jones On April - 2 - 2011
At WrestleMania 27, the Women’s Division will be represented during a mixed tag-team match consisting of Trish Stratus, Snooki and John Morrison versus LayCool and Dolph Zigler, managed by Vickie Guerrero. On the surface, this appears to be a fun match.  The addition of a celebrity always adds an extra element of entertainment. Beneath the surface, however, what does this match say about the state of the Women’s Division? It must be noted that Eve is currently the Women’s Champion. It has not been stated that she will be involved in a match, so as it stands, while both men’s championships are ...

WWE: The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels’ Hall of Fame Induction

I had a dream. In my dream, an unidentified English-speaking being, perhaps an alien from Uranus, visited Earth for one day. After exploring various stores, this being, who I will call Ura, overhears three people speaking about an upcoming wrestling event.Ura, being new to the planet, has no idea what wrestling is. After the three people leave, Ura spots me. He asks me, “What is wrestling?” I, being extremely friendly, take Ura to my house, and say, “Have a seat; you’re in for a treat.” I first explain to him that pro wrestling is a sport that takes fantasy worlds ...
The Rock, John Cena, and The Miz   Interestingly, last night’s Raw saw the WWE Champion as a side note…again.  I thought that as WrestleMania drew nearer, The Miz would be made to look a little stronger against John Cena, or at least important to his world title match. I, in no way, shape, or form am a fan of the Miz. However, I am a fan of a strong storyline and match, especially when I am paying to see it. After last night’s Raw, it seems certain that The Miz is truly an afterthought in his world title feud against Cena. The primary focus, ...
Each year at Wrestlemania, the fans expect a classic, a match that will stand the test of time.  It is an epic battle, composed of two titans.  Last year, Undertaker and Shawn Michaels filled that spot.  It was a clash of magnificent proportions.  From its build-up to the promos to the match itself, their battle told a remarkable story and gave Michaels an honorable departure. This year’s Wrestlemania seeks to fill that slot with another set of titans: Triple H and Undertaker.  On paper it seems plausible that the pairing of these two legends will make for an exciting and standard-breaking ...

GLAAD Is Not Glad with John Cena or WWE: Bullying Hypermasculinity

Posted by tiffanie jones On March - 18 - 2011
One word aptly describes the sport of professional wrestling: hypermasculinity.  Wrestlers train intensely, eat a specific diet and use body-enhancing supplements to achieve the perfect male physique.  They are likened to Grecian and Roman gladiators who exemplify the standard of masculinity.  Those standards include rejecting “lesser” masculinities.  Recently, however, GLAAD—the Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation—has criticized the sport for this rejection, stating that bullying is likely to result.  Their complaints came as a result of John Cena’s anti-gay remarks in his raps toward The Rock.  GLAAD believes that wrestling can help to stop bullying of gays and lower suicidal ...

WWE: John Cena’s Greatest Insult to The Rock

Posted by tiffanie jones On March - 10 - 2011
John Cena can’t seem to stop laughing. The question is, what’s so funny? On the February 14 edition of Monday Night Raw, the entire WWE Universe experienced a return of epic proportions.  It was "The Rock," and he came back with two things on his mind: to host Wrestlemania 27 and to confront Cena, the present-day face of the company.  It was exciting for fans, as they would witness a battle brewing for the last three years. To say the least, the pairing of John Cena and The Rock is a dream match…if only Cena could stop laughing! The Rock is notorious for his ...

Can The Rock Cure the Apathy in the WWE Universe?

Posted by tiffanie jones On March - 1 - 2011
Remember that old song, "If I Didn't Care?"   That's the perfect tune to sum up the current WWE audience.    One word seems to perfectly describe the responses of the “E” Universe: apathy.    Once upon a time, wrestling fans were so involved in the product that it appeared as though the very roof was blown off of the building (see Steve Austin or The Rock).  Fans would break the barricades for one touch of their favorite superstar (see Shawn Michaels).    They would send their most hated superstars right out of their presence with the thunder of their boos (see Triple H).  Respect and adoration would ...
